Food waste is a very serious problem in today’s world. It means throwing away food that could still be eaten, for example because it is past the best-before date, it looks bad, or we simply cook too much and can’t eat everything. According to various studies, about one third of all food produced globally is wasted. That’s a shockingly high number, especially when you think about people in the world or even in Poland who lack enough to eat.
There are many reasons why food waste happens. Sometimes people buy more food than they really need, especially during promotions or in big supermarkets, and later they realize they can’t eat all of it before it goes bad. Restaurants and shops also throw away food that is still good, because it doesn’t look fresh or perfect. People may not plan meals properly, forget food in the fridge, or serve too much during parties and holidays.
Why is it important to reduce food waste? Firstly, food production requires a lot of water, energy, and resources. If we waste food, we also waste these resources, which is bad for the environment. Secondly, food waste produces methane when it ends up in landfill, and this is a greenhouse gas contributing to climate change. Thirdly, it is unfair – while some people don’t have enough to eat, others throw away perfectly good food.
One way to reduce food wastage is called foodsharing. Foodsharing is an idea where people, cafés, restaurants, and shops share extra food instead of throwing it away. For example, in bigger Polish cities you can find so-called “jadłodzielnie” (food-sharing points), which are special fridges or shelves in public places for anyone to leave extra food or take something for free. This helps people in need, students, or anyone who wants to save money and fight waste at the same time. It also connects the community, because it’s based on trust and cooperation.
Another modern solution is the Too Good To Go mobile app. In this app, bakeries, restaurants, and shops can offer food that is about to be thrown away at the end of the day for a much lower price. Users of the app can buy a “surprise bag” for a few złoty and save perfectly good food at the same time. It’s very popular in bigger cities, and I think it’s a great idea. Everyone benefits: businesses don’t waste food, customers get tasty meals for less money, and there’s less rubbish for the environment.
As for my own experiences, I have used the Too Good To Go app a few times. I bought a “mystery bag” from a bakery and got several bread rolls and cakes that were fresh and delicious. I also know friends who use foodsharing points, especially students who don’t always have a lot of money for food.
To sum up, reducing food waste is very important for society and the environment. We can do it by planning shopping better, using leftovers, and sharing food instead of throwing it away. Foodsharing projects and apps like Too Good To Go are clever, practical ways to fight this problem. I believe everyone can do something, even small, to make a difference.
Possible answers to additional questions:
1. What do you think is the best way to promote foodsharing? I think the best way is through social media and school campaigns. Young people learn quickly and can spread the word. Also, it’s helpful to have posters in schools, shops, and universities. Organizing local events or foodsharing days can show how easy and useful it is.
2. What can a teenager do to help the environment? A teenager can help by reducing food waste in their family, using reusable bags and bottles, separating rubbish, turning off lights, and using public transport or a bike. They can also take part in clean-up events or participate in environmental projects at school.
3. Tell me about something you (or someone you know) did to help the planet. Last year, my class organized a collection of food for a local shelter. We brought products and packed boxes for people in need. I also helped my parents start composting at home – now we produce less rubbish, and we use the compost in the garden. One of my friends is a volunteer in a local foodsharing project and often picks up food from restaurants to deliver to people in need.
These are just a few examples of how everyone, including young people, can care for the environment and fight food waste.
