New Types of Human Rights

Introduction

Good morning/afternoon everyone. Today I would like to present a topic that is both modern and very important: “New Types of Human Rights”. We usually think of human rights as basic and universal – like the right to life, freedom, and security. However, the world is constantly changing. New technologies, new social challenges, and globalization force us to think about what else should be protected as a human right. In my presentation, I will talk about what new human rights are being discussed nowadays, why they are needed, and what changes they may bring to our lives.

Traditional Human Rights – A Brief Overview

First, let’s briefly recall what traditional human rights are. These were defined after World War II, with a key document being the Universal Declaration of Human Rights from 1948. It contains rights such as the right to equality before the law, the right to freedom of expression, or the right to education.

However, when this document was written, nobody expected problems like cyberbullying, climate change, or artificial intelligence. That’s why nowadays new rights are being proposed to adapt to our realities.

What Are ‘New’ Human Rights?

New human rights are rights that address the modern challenges of the 21st century. They are inspired by technological advancement, environmental threats, or changes in society. Often, they are not yet included in any official international document, but they are being seriously discussed by lawyers, politicians, and activists from around the world.

Examples of New Human Rights

1. Right to Digital Privacy

With the development of the Internet, a huge amount of our data is collected and shared online. Our personal information, browsing history, location, and even private conversations can be tracked or stolen. That’s why digital privacy is considered a new basic human right. The European Union introduced the GDPR regulation in 2018 to protect citizens’ online data – but some argue it should be recognized and protected globally.

2. Right to Be Forgotten

Closely related to digital privacy, the ‘Right to Be Forgotten’ means that everyone should have the right to ask that their personal data be removed from the internet. This is especially important for young people who may have posted something they regret, or for people who want to start a new chapter in life without being judged for the past.

3. Right to a Healthy Environment

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our times. That’s why many activists and lawyers suggest that everyone should have a right to live in a safe and clean environment. In October 2021, the United Nations Human Rights Council officially recognized access to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment as a human right. This is a big step, but many countries must still adopt this right into their own laws.

4. Right to Internet Access

In today’s world, access to the internet means access to information, education, and social life. The COVID-19 pandemic showed how important it is. Without the Internet, people are excluded from society. Some governments, for example in Finland, have already recognized Internet access as a basic right.

5. Rights Related to Artificial Intelligence

As artificial intelligence develops, we face new challenges. For example, can AI make decisions about our lives or jobs? Should there be a right not to be judged only by algorithms? Laws about AI and our rights are now being created in the European Union, but this is a global debate.

Why Are New Human Rights Important?

Protecting new human rights is not just fashion – it’s a response to real problems that affect millions of people each day. Without new rights, we cannot feel really free and safe in the digital world, nor can we fight effectively for the future of the planet. It’s important that education, governments, and international organizations keep up with new threats and challenges.

---

Conclusion

In summary, the idea of human rights continues to grow. The world does not stand still; new technologies and threats mean that our rights must expand. It is up to us, especially the new generation, to discuss, promote, and defend these rights. Only then can we build a just, modern, and safe society for everyone.

Thank you for listening! If you have any questions, I’ll be happy to answer.

Oznacza prawo do życia w bezpiecznym, czystym i zrównoważonym otoczeniu.
