Food waste is one of the most serious problems facing societies around the world today, and Poland is no exception. Food waste means throwing away food that could still be eaten. This happens at every stage, from production, through shops and restaurants, right up to our own homes. Research shows that in Europe and North America, every person throws away hundreds of kilograms of food each year. In Poland, unfortunately, the statistics are equally alarming: according to the Institute of Environmental Protection, every Pole throws away almost 250 kg of food a year. This is not only an ethical problem, but also an environmental and economic one.

Why is reducing food waste so important? First of all, it is unethical to waste food when there are still many people who do not have enough to eat. Secondly, the production and disposal of food uses a lot of water, land, energy, and fuel. Food that ends up in a landfill produces methane, a gas that accelerates climate change. Therefore, throwing away food has a negative impact on the environment. In addition, it means wasting money—both the money we spend on groceries and the resources needed to produce them.

There are many ways to reduce food waste. The first and easiest step is planning our shopping carefully and making a grocery list. By buying only what we need, we minimize the risk of having to throw anything away. The second thing is to store food properly—for example, keep fruit and vegetables in the refrigerator or pantry, and pay attention to expiry dates. We should also try to cook only as much as we are able to eat, or use leftovers for other dishes, such as soups, casseroles, or salads.

Recently, new ideas and technologies have emerged that help fight food waste. One of them is foodsharing. Foodsharing is the idea of sharing surplus food with other people, instead of throwing it away. In Poland, there are foodsharing points in many cities where anyone can leave food or take what they need. This is especially helpful for people in need, but also for the environment, as it reduces the waste going to landfill. Foodsharing is a way to build a local community and solidarity, because it encourages cooperation and sharing.

Another interesting solution is the mobile application Too Good To Go, which is also available in Poland. Too Good To Go connects restaurants, bakeries, shops, and cafés that have surplus food at the end of the day with customers who are willing to buy it at a reduced price. This food is still fresh and safe to eat, but could otherwise end up in the bin because it was not sold in time. For the customer, using Too Good To Go is a chance to get delicious meals at a lower price, and for businesses it is an opportunity to reduce food waste and sometimes even gain new regular customers. In my opinion, this is a fantastic solution because it is beneficial to everyone—the environment, sellers, and buyers.

As for my own experience, I have tried foodsharing a few times and I really appreciate the idea. I have also used the Too Good To Go app. I bought a "magic pack" from a local bakery and it was a very positive experience. Not only did I get tasty food at a lower price, but I also felt good knowing that I was helping to reduce food waste. I think that if more people used such solutions, we could significantly minimize the problem of food waste in Poland.

To sum up, food waste is a big problem, but we all can contribute to solving it. By making wise purchases, storing food properly, sharing surpluses and using modern applications like Too Good To Go, we protect the environment and help others. It is worth taking small steps every day to reduce the amount of food we throw away. Together, we can achieve a lot!
